About This Privacy Policy

Referendum is an online public opinion and polling platform. Our Service allows users to create polls, vote in polls, comment, view public poll results, and interact with public content.

When you use Referendum, you share some information with us. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, how we use it, when it may be visible to other people, when we may share it with service providers, and what choices you have.

For purposes of this Privacy Policy, "Referendum", "we", "us", and "our" refer to Referendum. "Service" refers to the website available at https://en.referendum.social/. "You" means the person using or accessing the Service.

Information We Collect

There are three basic categories of information we collect:

  • Information you choose to give us
  • Information we get when you use our Service
  • Information we may receive from service providers, analytics providers, advertising providers, or login providers

How We Collect Information

Information You Choose to Give Us

When you create an account, participate in polls, create polls, post comments, or contact us, we collect information that you choose to provide.

For account registration and public opinion analysis, we may collect:

  • Email address
  • Username, nickname, or display name
  • Password or other authentication information
  • First name and last name, if provided
  • Date of birth
  • Age or age group
  • Gender
  • Country
  • Region, state, province, or similar geographic area
  • City
  • Language preferences
  • Profile information, if you choose to provide it
  • Account settings and registration status

Some information may be required to create an account, verify basic eligibility, protect the Service, reduce abuse, or provide more structured public opinion results. Other information may be optional and used to improve polling filters and statistical analysis.

We do not intentionally ask for your phone number, full street address, or ZIP/postal code as part of normal account registration. If you voluntarily provide that information in a comment, poll, profile, message, or other communication, we may receive it.

Content You Submit

You also provide information when you use the interactive parts of the Service. This may include polls you create, poll questions and answer options, votes, comments, public profile information, reports, support requests, and other content you choose to submit.

Keep in mind that polls, comments, usernames, profile information, and other content you submit in public areas of the Service may be visible to other users and the general public. Public content can be copied, indexed, saved, shared, or distributed outside of our Service. Please do not post information that you do not want to be public.

Information We Get When You Use the Service

When you use the Service, we collect information about how you use it. For example, we may collect information about pages, polls, categories, tags, or content you view; searches and filters you use; polls you vote in; comments or polls you create; login dates; time spent on pages; and other account or usage activity.

Device, Log, and Location Information

We may collect information from and about the devices and browsers you use, including IP address, browser type, operating system, device type, device identifiers, advertising identifiers, language settings, cookie identifiers, access times, server logs, diagnostic data, and performance data.

We may also collect approximate location information, such as country, region, state, province, or city, based on information you provide or technical information such as your IP address. We do not intentionally collect precise GPS location as part of normal website use unless a feature clearly asks for it and you choose to allow it.

How We Use Your Information

We use your information to provide, improve, protect, and develop the Service. For example, we may use your information to:

  • Create, manage, and secure your account
  • Allow you to create polls, vote, comment, and use interactive features
  • Display public polls, public comments, public profiles, and public results
  • Analyze public opinion data using available filters such as country, city, age, gender, and registration status
  • Improve the structure, transparency, and accessibility of public opinion data
  • Monitor trends, traffic, and usage of the Service
  • Personalize or improve your experience
  • Measure the performance of polls, content, features, and advertising
  • Send service-related messages, account notices, security alerts, or support responses
  • Detect, prevent, and address spam, fraud, abuse, unauthorized activity, or security issues
  • Enforce our terms, rules, policies, and legal rights
  • Comply with applicable laws, legal processes, or governmental requests

We may also use aggregated, anonymized, or de-identified information for statistics, research, analytics, public opinion summaries, and service improvement. This information is not intended to identify you personally.

How We Share Information

We do not sell your personal information for money.

With Other Referendum Users and the General Public

Because Referendum is a public polling and discussion platform, some information may be visible to other users and the general public. Examples include:

  • Your username, nickname, display name, or public profile information
  • Polls you create and publish
  • Poll questions, answer options, descriptions, categories, and tags
  • Comments you post
  • Public poll results and statistics
  • Publicly visible activity, if shown by the Service
  • Content you choose to share from our Service to other websites or social platforms

Some poll results may be displayed using demographic or geographic filters, such as country, city, age group, gender, or registration status, where available. We use this to make public opinion data more structured and transparent.

With Service Providers

We may share information with service providers who help us operate, host, secure, analyze, advertise, maintain, or improve the Service. These may include hosting providers, database providers, analytics providers, advertising providers, email providers, security providers, spam prevention tools, and technical support tools.

For Legal Reasons

We may disclose information if we reasonably believe that disclosure is necessary to comply with law, respond to legal process, protect the rights or safety of Referendum, our users, or the public, prevent fraud or abuse, enforce our terms, or defend against legal claims.

Business Transfers

If Referendum is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, bankruptcy, sale of assets, or similar transaction, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

With Your Consent

We may share information for other purposes if you give us permission to do so.

Analytics and Advertising Services

We may use third-party analytics and advertising services, such as Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google AdSense, Meta Pixel, or similar services. These services may use cookies, pixels, device identifiers, IP addresses, browser information, and usage information to help measure traffic, understand activity, improve the Service, prevent fraud, measure advertising performance, and show ads.

We do not sell your personal information for money. However, under some privacy laws, allowing advertising or analytics providers to collect information through cookies or similar technologies may be considered a "sale", "sharing", or "targeted advertising". Where those laws apply, you may have the right to opt out.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies to operate the Service, remember your preferences, keep you logged in, improve performance, understand usage, provide analytics, measure advertising, and protect the Service.

Cookies may include necessary cookies, preference cookies, analytics cookies, and advertising cookies. Where required by law, we use non-essential analytics and advertising cookies only with your consent.

You can accept, reject, or manage cookies through our cookie consent banner where available. You can also set your browser to refuse cookies or alert you when cookies are being used. If you reject or disable cookies, some parts of the Service may not work correctly.

How Long We Keep Your Information

We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, unless a longer retention period is required or permitted by law.

For example, we may keep basic account information while your account is active. We may keep public polls, public comments, and public content until they are deleted or removed. We may keep usage data and server logs for security, analytics, debugging, and abuse prevention.

If you delete your account or ask us to delete your information, we will delete or anonymize personal information where required by applicable law, subject to legal exceptions. Some information may remain for a limited time in backups, logs, or security records. Public content that has already been copied, indexed, shared, or stored by other users or third parties may remain outside of our control.

Control Over Your Information

Depending on the features available on the Service and your location, you may be able to access, update, correct, download, or delete your account information; change your cookie preferences; request deletion of your account or personal information; withdraw consent where processing is based on consent; or opt out of certain advertising or analytics cookies where required by law.

You may contact us to make a privacy request. We may need to verify your identity before processing certain requests.

Privacy Rights

EU, EEA, and UK Users

If you are located in the European Union, the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another region with similar data protection laws, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, object to, or receive a copy of your personal information. You may also withdraw consent where processing is based on consent and may have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection authority.

Where GDPR or similar laws apply, we may process your personal information based on consent, contract, legal obligation, or legitimate interests, such as operating, securing, improving, analyzing, and protecting the Service.

California Residents

If you are a California resident, you may have rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), and other California privacy laws.

These rights may include the right to know what personal information we collect, use, disclose, sell, or share; the right to access specific pieces of personal information; the right to delete personal information; the right to correct inaccurate personal information; the right to opt out of sale or sharing where applicable; the right to limit use and disclosure of sensitive personal information where applicable; and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising privacy rights.

We may need to verify your identity before responding to certain privacy requests.

Children's Privacy

Our Service is not intended for children under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16.

If you are a parent or guardian and believe that a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, please contact us. If we learn that we have collected personal information from a child under 16 without an appropriate legal basis, we will take reasonable steps to delete that information.

Security of Your Information

We use reasonable measures to protect your information. However, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is completely secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.

You are responsible for keeping your account login information confidential. Please use a strong password and contact us if you believe your account has been accessed without permission.

International Data Transfers

Referendum is available to users in different countries. Your information may be processed, stored, or transferred in countries other than the country where you live. Data protection laws in those countries may be different from the laws in your country.

Where required by applicable law, we take reasonable steps to protect your information when it is transferred internationally.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we may update the "Last Modified" date at the top of this page. If we make material changes, we may provide additional notice, such as posting a notice on the Service or sending a message where appropriate.
